47 éves korában kezdett fotografálni, s - mint mondta - 54 éves korától „tudatosabban". Foglalkozása géplakatos. Nem vonzódott aktuális szenzációkhoz, nem alkalmazott divatos technikai zsonglőr-mutatványokat. Biztos technikai tudással, természetesen egyszerű komponáló képességgel oldotta meg az önmaga elé tűzött feladatokat. Élni tudott az anyagszerűséggel, az atmoszféra érzékeltetésével, a fény-árnyék vagy az élesség-életlenség helyes alkalmazásával.

György Gebhart was an engine fitter who started taking photos at age 47. He said when he turned 54 he became more aware of his photography. He was not attracted to the latest crazes. He did not care about trends. Instead, his images capture his technical knowledge with a composition of natural simplicity. He knew how to depict his subject matter, the surroundings, light and shadows, sharpness and blurriness.
